Nooit gedacht dat ik in Fankrijk zoveel aandacht zou hebben voor witte Franse bestelwagens. Tot het theaterfestival in Avignon. Halverwege de nacht, na een avondje theater, stappen we langs de stadsomwalling, die ook als parking dienst doet, terug naar het hotel. Een volslanke dame van om en bij de vijftig houdt karig de wacht bij haar witte bestelwagen. Naïef als we zijn bemerken we dat men niet vaak vrouwen met zo’n bestelwagen ziet; en al zeker niet alleen bij nachte. Nu ja, het leek ons dan ook een stevige dame te zijn met een pak levenservaring zoals dat heet.
Naïviteit moet echter geen moment van zwakte zijn maar een karaktereigenschap, een manier om naar de wereld te kijken. Wanneer een hondertal meter verder een charmante dame ons toe lacht, begroeten we haar in de gedachte dat er toch wel veel gebeurt op zo’n parking wanneer de nacht gevallen is.
Tot we iets verder het licht zien… Een straatmadelief doet haar wagen als een echte marketeer eruit springen, wat met zoveel concurrentie broodnodig is. Zoals Jozef en Maria het licht moeten hebben gevolgd trekt ze de aandacht van argeloze toeristen met een uniek theelichtje voor het stuur. Hoe kwamen die dames op het idee? Schuimen ze alle Franse festivals af op zoek naar hun klanten zoals er zich niemand vragen stelt bij de zoveelste friet- of pizzatent op festivals? Een mens leeft immers niet van eten alleen.
Ondertussen weten we meer. Je vindt ze niet alleen in Avignon, ook in Parijs en allicht in alle andere steden. Er staat er altijd eentje geparkeerd aan Porte Dauphine. Geen kaars voor haar raam, maar een groot pluchen hart. Toen het deze zomer heel warm was stond de deur even open. Het werd haar te heet… en ik kon zo nieuwsgierigheid als een kleine jongen die een kerstgeschenk krijgt binnenkijken. Het zijn niet langer ordinaire bestelwagens, er staat een bed en ze hebben er alles om gasten te ontvangen of om te overleven… Jammergenoeg is dat allicht ook het enige wat de meesten onder hen hebben.
